// What was your life like prior to your CrossFit training and why did you want to start working with a coach?

I was not out of shape or misguided before I came to CFJ. I have always been an active Coloradan embracing the lifestyle of skiing, mountain biking, and hiking, using some at home workouts as a good basis for fitness. However, I knew that I was not realizing my full fitness potential through the trendy at home workouts because I was feeling sluggish on my mountain bike rides and not eating the right way. Some fellow firefighters recommended Cross Fit as an better alternative to overall fitness and health so I decided to check it out in September 2011…….

// What have been your greatest challenges (physically, mentally, emotionally) since you began your CrossFit Training?

The greatest challenge within this journey is knowing that I am capable of taking on any of the WODs and individual exercises. All of the confidence has to start in the box, and I can remember that I when I could not finish one double under, one kipping pull up, or an overhead squat. With all of the assistance from the coaches and participants, I truly have developed the confidence to take on any of the workouts. While I still have much work to do, I have the path to success and motivation provided through the CFJ community. Another challenge has been to constantly improve at the lifting exercises. I primarily swam, played tennis and baseball as a teenager, and did not lift many weights. The body weight and cardio exercises have not been difficult, but the right technique and movements with weights are part of long term CF goals.

// What have been your greatest successes (physically, mentally or emotionally) since you began? How does your body feel now compared to when you started and WHY?

The first success I can think of is embracing the value of the RIGHT nutrition. I was under the belief that I could eat whatever as long as I was working out even though I have been relatively healthy. Through I AM CROSSFIT and adopting the Paleo diet, I have reduced my sugar intake dramatically (no more energy drinks!), reduced my alcohol consumption and increased my protien intake and felt stronger everyday. As a result, my body feels and looks more slim line and muscular then before!

// How has your life changed since starting CrossFit training?

Has CrossFit transferred over into any other areas of your life? My focus and confidence at work has been augmented knowing that I can accomplish any goal with the right determintion and teamwork, just like in the box. I feel like my mind is clearer and I am making better decisions through the right diet, sleeping more, and not panicking in stressful situations. Overall, the effect has been a more enjoyable and confident existence that I can share with my family and friends.

// What are the advantages of CrossFit style training compared to your previous workout styles?

The positive, teamwork environment mixed in with the long term approach to an improved fitness AND lifestyle cannot be discounted. While I had felt challenged physically with Insanity, P90X, and P90X Plus, there was no carryover to my personal life with increased motivation and mental focus in my overall life like I have experienced at CFJ.

// What advice can you give to others?

If you come through the front door at CFJ, you need to remember that you came in because of a desire to change your life. Embrace that drive to change your life starting with each WOD by setting your own realistic and achievable goals over a long yet fruitful journey. Patience and perseverence through an open mind will lead to new physical and spiritual achievements. Each WOD emulates life, where it is always harder and farther to the end then you tink it is, but so worth the finish….
