Q. Describe your journey from walking through the door the first time to now. How has your life changed both inside and outside the gym since you started?

I have always been active ever since I was a kid, playing softball, basketball, tennis and being ranked part of the #1 doubles badminton team in Illinois in high school (yes, embarrassingly it is a sanctioned sport!).  After high school, I always ran and when I met my husband who is from Colorado, I got even more active!  Skiing, hiking, doing Pilates and yoga, running the Bolder Boulder, swimming, biking the Triple Bypass.  But he really turned me on to weightlifting.  I was getting to a point working out at the YMCA where I felt like I needed more of a push and felt screen-shot-2017-04-01-at-10-48-30-amuncomfortable lifting heavy weights there for fear of bad form.  So, one day in my yoga class this super buff woman walked in sweaty from her “WOD” at CrossFit Julia and Sharon W. convinced me to just “try it out.”  I am so glad that I did!  At the YMCA, I always felt like the oddball practicing my pull-ups and deadlifting heavy, but at CrossFit Julia, it is so nice to surround myself with other people who want to push themselves and especially around women who want to get strong, not just skinny, which is what I always felt when I was exercising at other gyms.  Most of my close friends are from college and live elsewhere so I am feeling like part of a community and meeting some really nice and like-minded people at CrossFit Julia which had made me happier and more confident.


Q. What have been your greatest victories and challenges throughout your journey?

My greatest victories have just been to show up to class even after looking at the WOD and seeing that it is something that I don’t feel good at – like double unders, burpees, rope climbs, toes to bar….list goes on!  I am proud of myself for trying something new.  My greatest challenge has been to realize that I am getting older and need to realize my limitations before getting hurt (I tend to overdo it at times) plus not to get down on myself when I watch other people CRUSH me in a workout! And, my GREATEST challenge is to see the whiteboard and the clock from further than 1 foot away!  Amber and Tracy will especially understand that “challenge” of mine 🙂

Q. What drives you to keep coming back ? What are your favorite things about your workout experience and with CFJ as a whole? 

I really enjoy the variety of full body workouts and their intensity BUT what really makes me come back are the coaches.  I have learned SO many things from each coach that I never even knew about form, muscle function, mobility and diet (which is my next goal…)! I just feel like everyone at the gym has my back, even if they don’t know me which seems rare nowadays.

Q. What’s your favorite workout?

My favorite workout….hmmmm…..I like leg workouts.  Box Jumps are my jam 🙂


Q. What advice can you give to others?

Not much!  I feel like I am so new to this whole CrossFit thing that I don’t know if I have much to offer but my big one at the beginning of CrossFit was to not look at the workout the day before!  It just got me too
intimidated to come each day.  I am really glad I did not do that the first few months.  And, to try the Open!  It was so humbling but really fun to meet people that are not part of the typical 9:15 or 11:30 class that I go to and hear all their tips on the workout.


Q. What are you looking forward to in the future? 

I am looking forward to being able to complete workouts for the 2nd time around to hopefully see improvement, and I am also looking forward to bringing my growing kids and husband to the gym soon to join with me.  I love exercising and being active with my family.
