Amy Harrison & Katie Fisher

Q. What was your life like prior to your CrossFit training and why did you want to start working with a coach?

Amy: Prior to CrossFit we had memberships to Colorado Athletic Club where we took some classes, used the treadmill, looked at the weights from the treadmill, and mostly used the the hot tub. We were barely going, spending a lot of money on the membership, and not seeing any results. We finally cancelled our membership and started doing workouts at home with P90x and other random videos. We heard about CrossFit but we were hesitant to try it because of the the cult rumors. However Katie and I both had friends at CrossFit Julia and they told us how much they loved it and how successful they were with the workouts there. We were convinced to try it after all. We knew having a coach would give us the motivation and direction that we really really needed.

Q. What have been your greatest challenges (physically, mentally, emotionally) since you began your CrossFit Training?

Katie: Neither Amy nor I grew up doing sports or gymnastics so we were naive about what our bodies are capable of. Physically, both of us were active hiking and running on the weekends but didn’t have a well rounded physical routine. After joining CrossFit we both found that we have very different strengths and weaknesses. It’s been very helpful to workout together because we can give each other tips, help motivate, and celebrate each others progress.

I have struggled with mobility and the limitations that that causes in many of the movements that we do. A lot of my progress has been on improving and focusing on form rather than increasing weight. Amy has struggled most with coordination and doubts that she can do certain moves like box jumps, hand stands, and rope climbs. It has been a challenge to get past the mental block that prevents her from doing these moves but once she does its very rewarding.
The biggest emotional challenge that we have faced is explaining the benefits of CrossFit to other people and disputing the negative ideas that a lot of people have about the sport. After seeing the progress that we have made, people were more open to listening to our points.

Q. What have been your greatest successes (physically, mentally or emotionally) since you began? How does your body feel now compared to when you started and WHY?

Amy : The first day that Katie and I drove up to CrossFit Julia the garage doors were open, music was blasting, and people were lifting, doing rope climbs, and muscle ups. We were terrified!! What were we thinking? Walking into the gym that day was our first great success and continuing to show up each week has furthered that success. We have both lifted more, are more mobile, and more fit than ever.

Also, CrossFit has inspired us to be more active outside of the gym as well, we are running our first half marathon this summer at the Grand Tetons. The change in our bodies has been overwhelming. Both of us did the food challenge in July of 2014 which led us to start eating cleaner. We both have lost a noticeable amount of weight while also gaining muscle. It feels great!

Q. How has your life changed since starting CrossFit training? HasCrossFit transferred over into any other areas of your life?

Katie: Our overall attitude of CrossFit is “just do it” which has led us to be more confident inside and outside of the box. We are both willing to try a lot more and push our boundaries. I am now more able to keep up with my mountain man       boyfriend and try nIMG_1190ew adventures, which is exciting for both him and I. I am a nurse so I am on my feet all day long, I have noticed that I have more energy throughout the day. I am now better able to physically move patients and beds due to improved strength and proper body mechanics.

Amy has also noticed a huge change in energy and actually wants to go work out each day instead of dreading it (which has never happened in her entire life!!!). She also has more motivation and is excited to plan fun summer adventures like back packing, hiking, and running races because she is more physically capable of excelling at these activities.

Q. What are the advantages of CrossFit style training compared to your previous workout styles?

We realized that merely looking at weights from a slow pace on the treadmill will not make you stronger. The well roundedness and continual variation of the workouts has made us stronger in all aspects. We also love the CrossFit community at CrossFit Julia, we always have a good time time and a good laugh. It’s a place that we can be ourselves while pushing to be better and everyone there supports us in that. This has been the biggest benefit and keeps us coming back.

Q. What advice can you give to others?
Just try it. There may be things that you are not capable of but you can always modify to fit your needs. It amazing the progress that you will make in such a short time. There is a place for everyone at CrossFit Julia whether young or old, no matter what your body type is.

Q. Any other details you would like to share about your experience?
There is so much pressure to have the perfect body and since starting CrossFit our reality of what that is has changed. It’s no longer about being skinny but being fit, muscular, confident, and comfortable in our own bodies. Woo Woooo Woooooo!!
