// What was your life like prior to your CrossFit training and why did you want to start working with a coach?
Prior to CrossFit Julia I was a pretty active person (or at least I thought!). I regularly practised yoga, ran, hiked and skied on the weekends. Even though I got in a workout almost every day, I hit a plateau and had not been seeing any results for a while. I also wasn’t really enjoying my workouts, eating healthy, or challenging myself the way I am now. About a year ago, I tried out an introduction to CrossFit at another gym in the area. I thought the idea of it was cool but did not really click with the members or coaches so I gave up and went back to my old routine. At the end of 2012, I decided to give it another shot and made my coworker sign up with me for an Evolutions class at CFJ! Woohoo, it was the best decision I’ve made in a long time!
// What have been your greatest challenges (physically, mentally, emotionally) since you began your CrossFit Training?
I’ve had quite a few challenges since starting CrossFit training. Obviously, this is a very physical workout and starting off I lacked any cardio endurance. Over the past few months I’ve seen huge improvements in this area but still have a long way to go. It’s humbling not being able to do a workout or feeling like I’m about to die only a minute into a workout. I see this as a great opportunity to get better each day. It doesn’t matter if I only get 1 extra rep in the next time I do a workout, I am just looking for some kind of improvement. In the past, I have always beat myself up about not “succeeding” (whatever that meant at the time) in every part of my life. Now I am much more positive and I tell myself that I am doing great and that I just need to take each day as it comes and to always strive for improvement.
// What have been your greatest successes (physically,mentally or emotionally) since you began? How does your body feel now compared to when you started and WHY?
I’ve had some of the most positive experiences of my life doing CrossFit. I’ve always struggled with being confident and feeling good about myself. I’ve never felt better since I’ve been WODing almost every day and eating paleo (most of the time!). I feel strong, healthy, happy, my skin has cleared up and I have so much more energy. I love working out at 6am. When I get to work, I feel revitalized and am ready to take on the day! Bottom line – I feel great. I know I will never be perfect but I’m headed in the right direction. I’m looking forward to working hard, staying positive, and getting healthier.
// How has your life changed since starting CrossFit training? Has CrossFit transferred over into any other areas of your life?
CrossFit has definitely impacted my life positively in many ways. In the past few months life has thrown my family many curve balls. I don’t think I could offer the support to my family that I have been without CrossFit in my life. It sounds cheesy but hitting up a WOD clears my mind, lifts my spirits, and forces me to stay positive no matter what is happening. I am happy that I can be strong and healthy for my family when they need me.
// What are the advantages of CrossFit style training compared to your previous workout styles?
I LOVE CrossFit training because it changes every day and I never get bored because each workout is a new challenge – mentally and physically. I’ve never been so consistently sore for months on end. It’s the best feeling!
I also really love the community at CrossFit Julia. It truly is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. I’ll never forgot the 2nd WOD at the Fresh Meat Competition. I was the last CFJ athlete to compete and everyone stuck around to cheer me on. It was a tough workout – burpees and push presses for 8 minutes. I thought my arms were going to fall off and had nothing left in me. Everyone was cheering me on, literally yelling at me to keep moving and get one more rep. It was a crazy experience, I didn’t really know what was going on but I kept listening to everyone and dropping to the ground for one more burpee. I finished that workout and it was the most amazing feeling – even coming in middle of the pack! I knew I gave it my all and to have the support of everyone around me was surreal.
// What advice can you give to others?
Each day is a chance to turn things around! It’s never too late to make a change. My Mom cut out a newspaper article with this quote for me a few years ago and it remains my favorite quote, one that I try to live by everyday:
“Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.
