// What was your life like prior to your CrossFit training and why did you want to start working with a coach?
I have been working out regularly since college, but never really saw any significant results. I had a set workout schedule where I did certain workouts on certain days of the week and I think my body had learned to adjust to that schedule and plateau. When I started a new job in March 2010, I wanted to find a gym in the Lafayette/Louisville area that fit well with my new work schedule. I started researching gyms in the area and came across CrossFit Julia.
// What have been your greatest challenges (physically, mentally, emotionally) since you began your CrossFit Training?
At the beginning, just completing some of the WODs was tough in all aspects (physically, mentally and emotionally) and it was pure agony. At a certain point, I started to enjoy the feeling of accomplishment and a high after each WOD, which is what keeps me coming back to CrossFit.
// What have been your greatest successes (physically, mentally or emotionally) since you began? How does your body feel now compared to when you started and WHY?
For as long as I can remember, probably since my early teens, I have had an unhealthy obsession with my weight. I have tried every diet that is out there and no matter how much weight I lost, I was never quite happy. I was always obsessed with the number on the scale and fitting in to the smallest clothes size possible. I would get on the scale every morning and that number would determine my mood for the day. Committing to CrossFit and Paleo has completely changed my attitude toward my body. I am not as obsessed with the number on the scale or what size pants I can fit into. My focus is to be fit and healthy, which makes me happy. Of course, when I commit to CrossFit and Paleo, I naturally feel and look my best as well.
// How has your life changed since starting CrossFit training? Has CrossFit transferred over into any other areas of your life?
The positive environment at CrossFit Julia has definitely seeped into other areas of my life. I think I have a much more positive outlook on life in general. I am able to keep my cool under stress, not worry about things that are out of my control and am able to appreciate all the good things in my life.
// What are the advantages of CrossFit style training compared to your previous workout styles?
Before CrossFit, I tried every fitness class out there (LesMills, kickboxing, pilates and yoga) and it kept me from being out of shape. I believe that CrossFit keeps me in shape. Also, CrossFit is the only exercise that has visibly changed my body. I have kept my yoga practice which goes well with CrossFit. Doing yoga after a week of CrossFit can feel like a torture session at times, but I know that stretching the tight muscles help the recovery process.
// What advice can you give to others?
Know that everyone starts and progresses at a different level. Don’t feel bad or ashamed about having to modify the workouts to your needs. What is important is that you are challenging yourself.
// Any other details you would like to share about your experience would be great! Please describe how things have changed and how you have accommodated being pregnant to your CrossFit journey!
When I found out that I was pregnant, one of the first things I did was to look up if you can CrossFit during pregnancy. It turns out that you can. You just have to watch your heart rate and modify accordingly. The support I get from Julia and the coaches are phenomenal and it really keeps me motivated. At 5 months pregnant, I am able to maintain the schedule of 4 WODs a week, yoga 1-2 times a week and walk my dog before work every morning. I believe that 8 months of CrossFit is behind all this energy. I am not sure how much longer I can keep this pace, but I am determined to stay active as long as possible.
