// What was your life like prior to your CrossFit training and why did you want to start working with a coach?
Prior to CF my life was like a lot of people’s. Before my kids were born I was pretty active. I played a lot of hockey and did spin classes with my wife. Once my kids were born everything changed. I was always very tired and didn’t feel like dragging myself to the gym or really doing much physical activity at all. I decided to try triathlons, I figured if I had a date where I had to perform it would make me workout. I did a couple races but realized I hated the training. Long runs and bike rides bored me to death and I really wasn’t seeing that much improvement in my body and it didn’t make me feel that much better. One day I was reading a triathlon magazine and there was an article about CrossFit. I did some research and thought it was right up my alley. At first I tried doing the workouts on my own from the main website but didn’t feel it was what I really wanted. I found CrossFit Julia, called Shawn came in for a one on one workout and I signed up that day.
// What have been your greatest challenges (physically, mentally, emotionally) since you began your CrossFit Training?
Just getting through the workouts at first was a huge challenge I was mentally intimidated. Before and during the workouts all I would say to myself was “just get through this”. I didn’t think I could but I just kept working.
// What have been your greatest successes (physically,mentally or emotionally) since you began? How does your body feel now compared to when you started and WHY?
By far the greatest success has been my mental strength. During one of the challenges I made it a point to create a new mantra “I CAN do this” and “Getting stronger getting better”. Every time a negative thought came into my mind I’d repeat those sayings over and over. It has made a HUGE difference not only in my training but also in my life.
My body feels great! I look forward to waking up in the morning with that sore feeling from a challenging workout the day before. I also look forward to my rest days but after a day or two off I can’t wait to get back to working out. I love it! When I first started I dreaded that feeling but now I look forward to it.
// How has your life changed since starting CrossFit training? Has CrossFit transferred over into any other areas of your life?
I feel great I have so much more energy and yes it has had a huge effect on my life outside of CrossFit. I’m now taking on challenges that I probably wouldn’t have even thought about doing before.
One specific instance, I was with my family on a weekend holiday up in the mountains. My wife asked me to go down stairs and grab a mattress and bring it upstairs so we can set up a bed for my kids, they were going to sleep in the same room. I thought to myself “woman are you crazy you want me to carry a mattress up 3 flights of twisting stairs?” then I instantly remembered that I did CrossFit and I take on challenges like that every day. I jumped up went down stairs grabbed the mattress and carried it up. No problem. It’s not that I was able to carry the mattress up it’s that I tried it. Before I would have made some excuse on how I couldn’t do it now I just do it. The idea of taking things on doesn’t intimidate me anymore.
// What are the advantages of CrossFit style training compared to your previous workout styles?
I love the intensity, variety, and community at CrossFit. Previously I’d go workout and it was pretty lame. I’d half ass it and didn’t get results. At CrossFit I’m encouraged to push harder and I love the feeling of accomplishing the workouts especially in the group setting. Also the coaches are awesome they do such a good job at modifying the workouts if needed and pushing you when needed it’s like you have a personal trainer at every workout. It’s just a fun place to be.
// What advice can you give to others?
Do not be intimidated!! CrossFit and more importantly CrossFit Julia is such an encouraging and welcoming community. People here want everybody to succeed no matter what type of shape you’re in or what your goals may be. You are going to meet some incredible people that will inspire you to be better at whatever you’re trying to accomplish. Yes the workouts are hard but when you get through them the sense of accomplishment makes it all worthwhile. What you do and learn about yourself in the box can have a profound effect on what you can accomplish in your day to day life.
